Manchester United icon Gary Neville has expressed that he wouldn't oppose Ole Gunnar Solskjaer taking on the Red Devils' managerial role permanently, provided he performs well as an interim manager.

He believes the club is repeating the same mistake that Liverpool made in the 1990s by opting for former players to manage the team, rather than hiring experienced managers.

Following the draw against Burnley, Neville spoke with Sky Sports, stating that Manchester United is making the same decisions they attempted over a decade ago when they appointed Ryan Giggs after David Moyes was dismissed.

He remarked (via M.E.N): “I wouldn’t. We witnessed something similar at Liverpool, didn’t we? For about 25 or 30 years, they went through a phase without winning.”

“Cycles occur, and United has been in this for 12 years now. They appointed Ryan [Giggs] as manager ten years ago, and then Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] took charge, which feels like a return to the old team.”

Discussing what Solskjaer could contribute to the club, Neville stated: “It’s like trying one option, then another, creating a cycle that resembles a film we’ve all watched before — like Groundhog Day.”

“What I believe is that Ole is someone who genuinely loves the club. He understands the role well because he has experience in it.”

“The other names being considered, such as Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy, are truly remarkable individuals. I spent many years playing alongside them, and they share a deep affection for the club.”

“They will grasp the club's essence, but they will still encounter significant pressure in the upcoming four or five months if their results do not meet expectations. They must be prepared for that.”

“Regardless of who ultimately secures the position among those three mentioned, I wish them all success, as it is an incredibly challenging role. Manchester United recently parted ways with Ruben Amorim, and a new coach has yet to be appointed. Reports suggest that Solskjaer or Michael Carrick may step in as interim manager, with a permanent coach to be selected later this summer.”
