However, residents claim the road is filled with potholes.
Cristian Lambourne said there was an “epidemic” of potholes along the road.
He told Cambridgeshire Live : “Someone said on they counted over 100 potholes along the road – it’s ridiculous.
“When you travel down that road, you see a lot of people swerve.
“They are facing oncoming traffic, which isn’t good. I had one incident the other day when I was travelling around 50mph and it sounded like something physically smashed in my car.”
Cristian added that while the potholes are temporarily fixed they are not “fixed properly”.
He said: “We are expected to have an done on our , but the roads are damaging our cars.”
Lynne Otto said she travels down the road daily to visit her husband who is in a hospice.
She claimed that during the past two weeks her tyre blew which cost £140 to repair, an expense she said she could do without as she is not working in order to be able to visit her husband.
Lynne said she had been using the road to avoid the roadworks on the A1 but is now enduring the longer journey to make sure she avoids other problems with her car.
She added: “It’s shocking. In the day you can swerve, but in the dark you can’t. The road has gotten that bad because everyone uses the road rather than the A1. It should be a priority.”
Steven Ellmers described the road as “dangerous”, saying he’d had some “near misses” on the road.
He called for the entire road to be resurfaced, adding it was particularly bad when it was dark and raining.
Leah Martin, who lives in Tempsford, said she has “no choice” but to use the road on a daily basis.
She said in January the top mount of her front wheel “collapsed” after hitting a pothole and claimed that then caused her “brake caliper to lock onto my brake disk”.
It cost her £640 to repair and blamed the state of the stretch of road.
Leah added it was an “accident waiting to happen” along the road and the amount of traffic and lorries that have had to use the route had “contributed hugely” to the state of the road.
Jay Tucker said along the road was a “nightmare”, adding that you sometimes had to go into the other lane in order to avoid the potholes.
David Watson said there is a pothole “every few yards” meaning drivers had to weave around them and he “dreaded” having to drive along it at night.
Central Council is responsible for the stretch of road.
Councillor John Baker, executive member for finance and highways at the council said: ‘We are currently undertaking carriageway resurfacing and patching works on this road, which are scheduled to be completed by close of play Monday (February 23).
“We also carried out emergency repairs a few weeks ago to ensure the road remained safe for all users.”
The Sun Online has contacted Central Bedfordshire Council for further comment.
