NEARLY 11,000 people needed hospital treatment last year after dog attacks — the highest number on record.

There were 10,787 cases, up from 7,424 four years ago — a 45 per cent hike.

According to figures for 2024-25, 3,814 victims needed operations to repair wounds and reconstruct damaged skin, with many left permanently scarred.

Statistics also reveal the ­terrible toll on the young, with around 15 children a week ­needing surgery for .

Over the year, 406 kids under the age of four had operations after being , as well as 370 aged between five and nine.

Children are particularly vulnerable, often suffering bites to the face and upper body which require complex surgery.

Dr Ian Higginson, president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, said: “These cases can be personally difficult due to the age of those impacted.

“As these numbers show, patients come through the doors of our emergency departments with injuries sustained from dog bites that range from moderate to severe.”
