PASSENGERS will need to follow some strict new rules that have now been introduced onboard the world’s best airline.

Emirates is often winning more awards at this year’s Skytrax.

And they announced earlier this year that they would be cracking down on the use of power banks and onboard.

This is because of the risk of fire that they pose onboard, if they overheat and catch alight or even explode.

And the new rules are being enforced from today (October 1).

The new rules mean passengers can only carry one and it must be under 100Wh.

They also cannot be used to charge any devices such as mobile phones onboard, nor can they be charged using the aircraft power supply.

They must also not be in the and must be kept in the seat pocket or in bags underneath the seat.

The airline states: “Using any kind of power bank is prohibited onboard Emirates’ flights.

Other major airlines have since followed suit.

the use of power banks being used onboard, although they can be taken as long as they are in sight.

Japan‘s transport ministry confirmed similar rules about having to keep portable chargers in sight.

And other airlines including Thai Airways, Air Asia, Eva Air, Tigerair and Starlux have also introduced the power bank ban.

UK airlines such as and Ryanair are yet to introduce any similar rules.

What the new rules mean for your holiday

The Sun’s Head of Travel explains:

AS staying connected becomes ever-more important, a ban on the handy gadget that can keep our devices topped up could be seen as a pain.

But the catastrophic consequences of a fire on a plane are an obvious reason to make rules stricter.

After countless incidents – and with so many counterfeit and faulty goods out there – it makes sense they are cracking down.

But airlines do need to understand the need for us to be able to top up our devices in the air. With plans afoot to get rid of physical boarding passes in the coming years, making sure we’re able to use our devices will become ever more essential.

Adapting plane interiors to include USB ports will alleviate the need to top up on the go.

And more needs to be done to highlight the new rules – and the dangers these devices can pose.

However, all airlines currently ban power banks or portable chargers to be put into checked luggage.
