The Emir of Bauchi, Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, has urged all levels of government to subsidize diabetes medications due to the increasing cost of living in Nigeria.
Addressing attendees through the Galadiman Bauchi, Ibrahim Saidu Jahun, during a road walk organized by the Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria (IDN) and the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Bauchi State Chapter, the emir expressed concern over the high out-of-pocket expenses that individuals with diabetes endure.
He noted that the rising prices of essential medications have become unaffordable for numerous patients.
He called on federal, state, and local governments to add diabetes medications to the list of subsidized drugs in order to alleviate the financial burden on Nigerians managing this condition.
The emir also praised the NSN and its partners for their ongoing advocacy efforts regarding diabetes prevention and promoting healthy lifestyles.
In her remarks, the State Chairperson of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Comfort Daniel Madaki, stated that this year's World Diabetes Day activities emphasized providing accurate information about diabetes while encouraging healthy eating, regular physical activity, and routine medical check-ups.
She also mentioned that free diabetes screenings were offered at the Specialist Hospital in Bauchi.
The road walk, themed “Diabetes and Well-being,” commenced at the Emir’s Palace, traversed major streets, and concluded at the Government House in Bauchi.
