A former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Supo Ayokunle, has urged President Bola Tinubu to reach out to former President Donald Trump of the United States regarding the ongoing killings of Christians in Nigeria.
Ayokunle shared this recommendation during an interview on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a program aired on Channels Television.
He characterized the situation as alarming, emphasizing that it should have been addressed much earlier before it escalated to the current severity.
He expressed concern that insecurity has persisted in the country for over fifteen years, warning that a lack of prompt action could exacerbate the crisis. He urged the Federal Government to engage diplomatically with the American government to prevent further tensions.
He stated that if Nigeria requires assistance, it should directly request help from Washington instead of awaiting external intervention.
“President Tinubu should contact Donald Trump. If there is any assistance we need, we should formally request it.
“We must not wait until the US sends troops here. Once they arrive, it will be challenging to send them back. We do not desire another form of imperialism,” Ayokunle remarked.
His comments come in light of Trump's recent statements threatening potential military action in Nigeria due to reported assaults on Christians.
The former US president indicated that he had instructed the Pentagon to devise a response plan should Nigeria fail to halt the killings.
