The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formed a 22-member Constitution Review Committee aimed at enhancing internal democracy, discipline, and party administration.

The committee was inaugurated at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja on Thursday.

During the event, ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, emphasized that the party’s constitution is vital for its growth and direction. He referred to it as a framework that “guides our conduct, regulates our internal processes, and protects internal democracy.”

Mark stated that the review was necessary as the party continues to expand, insisting that the ADC must align its operations with international democratic standards.

He remarked that the initiative is “about ensuring clarity, fairness, inclusiveness, and accountability in our structures and processes.”

He elaborated that the objective is to establish a system that empowers members, fosters unity, resolves disputes justly, and positions the ADC as a credible alternative for national leadership.

The former Senate President urged committee members to engage party members at all levels. He encouraged them to “listen to the voices of party members at all levels, honor our founding values, and develop a constitution that strengthens internal democracy, promotes discipline, and ensures transparency in party affairs.”

The committee is led by Etigwe Uwa, SAN. Other notable members include Barrister Aishatu Dan-Kani, Professor Lawal Salihu, former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha, Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe, E.Y. Orker-Jev, Idris Abdullahi Umar, and Chief Ralph Nwosu, among others.

Part of the committee’s mandate is to review the existing ADC constitution and identify areas that need amendment or clarification.
It will also ensure that the document aligns with democratic best practices, electoral laws, and the Nigerian Constitution.
The panel aims to reinforce rules regarding inclusiveness, transparency, party primaries, congresses, discipline, and dispute resolution, with a special focus on women, youths, and individuals with disabilities.

In his acceptance speech, committee chairman Uwa expressed that members are prepared to commit their best efforts to the task.
He stated that they would utilize “our mental and physical resources to guarantee that the assignment is successfully completed.”

Uwa underscored that the goal is not to discard the current constitution but to enhance it, emphasizing that “the review is not because the existing constitution is inadequate, but rather to improve it significantly.”

He concluded that a robust constitution would help shield the party from internal conflicts and ensure the fair and democratic selection of leaders and candidates.
