Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has rejected claims suggesting that he intends to step aside for another presidential candidate, asserting that such allegations are inaccurate and misleading.
Atiku’s Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, provided this clarification in a statement on Thursday, October 2, 2025, following responses to the BBC Hausa interview conducted with the former Vice President.
Ibe noted that both the video and transcripts of the interview in Hausa and English were thoroughly reviewed, and “at no point did the former Vice President explicitly state, suggest, or imply that he plans to withdraw in favor of anyone.”
He emphasized that Atiku only addressed the potential for young individuals to enter the race.
“What Atiku Abubakar clearly and unequivocally stated was that young people, along with other prospective presidential contenders, are welcome to participate in the contest. He further emphasized that if a young candidate were to emerge through a competitive primary, he would fully support such a candidate without hesitation,” the statement conveyed.
Ibe criticized certain media outlets for misinterpreting Atiku’s remarks, stating: “While interpretative journalism is a valid aspect of reporting, distorting interpretation to the point of mischief is unacceptable and should not be condoned.”
