The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged Governor Seyi Makinde to fulfill his commitment to allocate the amount of N500 million to the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, in the 2024 fiscal year.
The legislators called on the governor to initiate monthly subvention payments to the institution starting in January 2026, emphasizing that reliable funding is essential for maintaining its academic and administrative functions.
This resolution was adopted following a motion put forward by Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, who represents the Ibadan South West Constituency II and serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education, and was seconded by Hon. Babajide Adebayo of Ibadan North Constituency II.
While presenting the motion, Fowokanmi expressed concern that the university is struggling with severe underfunding, which has adversely impacted its infrastructure, staff welfare, and academic activities.
He mentioned that the institution currently relies on scholarships, internally generated revenue, and TETFUND support, which are insufficient to meet its increasing requirements.
He praised Governor Makinde for establishing the Governing Council of the university, calling it a significant step towards ensuring institutional stability.
However, he noted that the N500 million previously announced by the state government for 2024 has not yet been disbursed.
The lawmaker pointed out that the financial strain on the school has intensified following the approval of the new minimum wage, forcing the management to take out bank loans to pay staff and fulfill other obligations.
In his ruling, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, supported Fowokanmi’s request by directing the Committee on Tertiary Education to collaborate with the university's management.
According to Ogundoyin, this collaboration will assist in auditing the school's accounts, internally generated revenue, and overall financial records, while also identifying additional challenges faced by the institution.
He stressed that the findings will inform the Assembly’s intervention and enable it to provide more robust legislative support for the university.
