Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has assured teachers in the state that their rewards are no longer deferred to the afterlife.

According to DAILY POST, the governor provided these assurances on Wednesday during the distribution of appointment letters to 5,000 newly hired teachers.

Okpebholo personally handed out the letters to the teachers, highlighting the importance of the event and the government’s commitment to recognizing its educators.

“Teachers, it brings me joy to see you. I preferred this approach because I had inquired multiple times if you had received your letters, and the response was always negative.

“Therefore, I chose to oversee the process myself. As you receive your appointment letters today, you will also be given transport fare, as I understand many of you have traveled long distances.

“You hold great importance to us. Your rewards are no longer in heaven; they are here, under our care,” he stated.

With the distribution of the appointment letters, the teachers who had previously been on contracts have now been officially integrated into the State Ministry of Education as permanent staff.

The governor recognized the crucial role teachers play in shaping the future of Edo State, stating that this employment initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of educators.

DAILY POST reported that 4,500 of the teachers were employed under the EdoStar program from the previous administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki, while the remaining 500 were newly recruited by the current state government.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, expressed profound gratitude for the teachers’ resilience over the past three years, despite the challenges of being on contract.

“You have endured hardships for years, yet you have remained dedicated to educating our children, often preparing lesson notes late into the night. Beautiful schools without teachers are of little use. Today, a leader who cares for your welfare day and night has arrived,” he added.

Iyamu highlighted some of the accomplishments of Okpebholo’s administration within the education sector, noting that the construction of over 68 schools within a year aims to benefit children from all backgrounds.

He also revealed that the EDU-Rescue Programme was initiated to provide children from disadvantaged backgrounds with access to quality education.
