The Yobe state government has banned the celebration of ‘Marker Day’ in all public and private schools across the state, citing concerns over growing indiscipline and moral decline among students.
The ban was announced in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Bukar Aji Bukar.
According to him, the decision followed observations that the events, once seen as harmless school celebrations, have now degenerated into activities that promote public disorder and undermine societal values.
“The celebrations have strayed far from acceptable school practices to now pose serious threats to discipline and security within the learning environment,” the statement read.
He directed all school principals to strictly comply with the ban and warned that any school found organizing or condoning such celebrations would face disciplinary action.
The marker day celebration is normally conducted during final examination as graduants use colorful markers to sign on each others uniform to serve as a reminder of their journey together
