Brazil legend, Rivaldo, has hailed Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates following their victory over Egypt in the Round of Sixteen of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

He expressed admiration for the 39-year-old player, who both scored and provided an assist in a thrilling comeback, speaking highly of his performance.

In a post on Instagram, Rivaldo said that Argentina and Messi demonstrated remarkable resilience during the game, refusing to concede defeat until the final whistle.

He noted that the 39-year-old is exhibiting the same fighting spirit he displayed during his inaugural World Cup and has been a key contributor in every match.

He posted, “What a fighting spirit, what a desire to win, what a battle and dedication from everyone! This is exactly what the fan expects from his team in the World Cup. As for talking about Leo Messi, it’s a given.

“What a player! At 39 years old, participating in his sixth World Cup, he continues to display the same fervor for the Argentina jersey; he celebrates, he battles, he sheds tears, and once again, he proves to be the decisive player.

“I am Brazilian, I cherish my country, and I will always support the Brazilian national team. Competition is an integral part of football, but I also recognize and appreciate when I witness a remarkable match and a team that gives its all on the pitch.

“Matches like these enhance the essence of football, and they truly deserve the World Cup stage. Congratulations to Argentina on their qualification.”

Lionel Messi missed a penalty in the first half when the score was 1-0. Egypt managed to score a second goal, but VAR intervened to disallow it before they went ahead 2-0 minutes later with a goal from Zico, who had also netted the previously ruled-out goal.

The Argentina captain assisted Romero’s first goal in the 79th minute and then netted the equalizer just four minutes later.

Lautaro Martinez and Enzo Fernandez collaborated to secure the winning goal in the 93rd minute.

The defending champions are set to face Switzerland in the quarterfinals.
