LALIGA will see sides wearing vintage shirts for their clashes this weekend.

However, two of the biggest sides in will not be taking part in the initiative.

League leaders and second-placed will not be wearing vintage shirts this weekend.

& Co are set to host Espanyol between both legs of their Champions League quarter-final encounter with

Los Blancos host Girona, before going to Germany to try and overturn their 2-1 deficit against .

SunSport can reveal why Barcelona and Real Madrid will not be taking part in the retro shirt initiative.

Why are Barcelona and Real Madrid not taking part?

Barcelona technically are taking part, but they are just not wearing a retro kit.

Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano and Getafe will all take part in the initiative, but due to logistical reasons, will not wear retro kits.

Instead of a vintage number from the 2000’s, or further, Barcelona will reportedly line up wearing their shirt from last season.

Real Madrid are not participating in any capacity, although there has been no explanation as to why.

Some reports in Spain suggest the club has not formally opposed the idea, while LaLiga officials hope Los Blancos will join the initiative next year.

League chiefs said: “We hope and trust that they will join next season. That is certainly our wish.”

Why are Spanish teams wearing retro shirts this weekend?

Teams in the top two divisions of Spain will be taking to the pitch in retro kits this weekend.

Spanish sides are taking part in the initiative to represent each club’s history and fan traditions.

The kits were unveiled at Madrid Fashion Week on March 19, as part of a football and fashion collaboration.

The league will look different as a whole, as referees will wear a special kit, and the TV broadcasts will also be vintage style.

There will also be an older style of match ball used throughout the weekend.

La Liga director Jamie Blanco has said: “It allows us to bring the past into the present while continuing to build experiences and strengthen the legacy that emotionally connects supporters.”

Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano and Getafe will not wear vintage uniforms due to production issues, but will still participate in the initiative in some capacity.
