Human rights attorney, Femi Falana, SAN, has explained to the Federal Government why the new tax law cannot be implemented.

Speaking to reporters in his hometown of Ilawe-Ekiti on Wednesday, Falana stated that the new tax laws cannot be enforced until the disputes regarding the validity of their provisions, stemming from allegations of improper amendments, are resolved.

He emphasized that the federal government should have utilized the final days of 2025 to address these issues and ensure that revised versions of the new tax laws were made available before January 1, 2026.

“If this is not addressed, the government may find itself in a difficult position by attempting to enforce the laws. There are interest groups prepared to contest the validity of these laws,” he warned.

It is important to note that President Bola Tinubu stated on Tuesday that the implementation of the tax laws on January 1, 2026, is non-negotiable.

However, the senior attorney reiterated that the laws cannot be enforced until the disputes regarding their legitimacy are settled.
