"Fulani Community Declares Zero Tolerance for Violence Against Their People and Cattle in Plateau"

The Fulani community in the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State has expressed its outrage over the rampant killings of herdsmen and their cattle in the council and other areas of the state, attributing these acts to local militia groups.

Abdullahi Yusuf Ibrahim, the Secretary of the Fulani Community, raised the alarm in a statement on Tuesday, noting that recent attacks, killings of herders, and cattle rustling are on the rise and will no longer be tolerated.

In his statement, Ibrahim revealed that from October to December 2025, more than 10 herdsmen have been killed, including young children, while over 204 cows have been confirmed as killed or stolen across Barkin Ladi, Jos South, Riyom, and Mangu LGAs. This situation raises concerns about the potential for broader communal, ethnic, and religious conflicts.

"Between October and December alone, Plateau State has witnessed a troubling increase in violence directed at herdsmen, jeopardizing their livelihoods, particularly through cattle rustling, poisoning, and the killing of over 10 of our people," Ibrahim stated.

He emphasized that both pastoralist and farming communities have endured significant losses due to unprovoked attacks affecting all parties involved.

"The violence is criminal in nature, rather than stemming from traditional disputes, and shielding offenders under tribal or religious pretexts jeopardizes collective security. Although security agencies are making efforts, achieving lasting peace requires shared responsibility," he added.

In his continuation, Ibrahim pointed out: "We wish to draw the attention of security agencies, government authorities, and the general public to an unfortunate incident that occurred on December 15, 2025, near the Jol Community in the Jol Ward of the Riyom Local Government Area, allegedly involving suspected Berom youth."

"Three cows belonging to Mr. Auwal Sale were injured by gunfire while grazing in the area. The animals sustained severe injuries, causing distress and financial loss to their owner. This incident has heightened anxiety among livestock owners and residents in the community."

"We vehemently condemn this act and urge the relevant security agencies to promptly investigate the incident, identify those responsible, and ensure they face justice. We also call on the authorities to implement proactive measures to prevent future occurrences and to safeguard lives and property in the area."

"We appeal for calm among all residents and promote peaceful coexistence, dialogue, and cooperation with security agencies as efforts are made to address this situation."

"We will continue to engage with the appropriate authorities and provide updates as necessary."

Ibrahim urged for decisive action by security agencies, strong intervention from the Plateau State government, leadership from traditional rulers, and a rejection of violence by youths and communities.

"Without urgent and united action, ongoing livestock attacks risk escalating into widespread loss of human lives," he concluded.
