A batch of newly recruited staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised alarm over what they describe as unexplained delays in their posting and onboarding since August 28, 2023.
According to the affected recruits, the apex bank issued them offer letters, obtained their acceptance, and instructed them to resign from their previous jobs as part of the documentation process.
Addressing journalists at the Nigerian Union of Journalists press centre in Bauchi, Emmanuel Linus Dabo, who spoke on behalf of others on Monday, said: “We all tendered resignation letters at that time to enable us proceed with the CBN process.”
He explained that the recruitment process began in April 2023, starting with résumé submissions at the CBN headquarters, followed by invitations from the Human Resources Department for interviews, aptitude tests, and medical examinations at the Bank’s clinic.
Dabo said all successful applicants were later contacted to visit the CBN headquarters in Abuja to collect offer letters, which were immediately signed and returned.
He added that the HR department sent multiple emails requesting credentials, resignation acknowledgements, and documents for online documentation—after which all communication ceased.
With no posting and no employment income, many of the recruits have been effectively jobless for nearly three years, a situation they believe may be linked to leadership changes at the apex bank.
Documents sighted by DAILY POST show that the applicants received “Provisional Offer of Appointment” letters with a one-year probation clause before confirmation.
The affected group also submitted letters of reminder to the new CBN Governor in September 2023, November 2024, and January 2025, but said none received any official response.
Speaking of their current hardships, Dabo noted that many of them are in distress:
“As I’m talking to you, many of our colleagues are depressed. We recently contributed N3,000 each to support some who are in the hospital. Many can’t pay rent, bills, or school fees. Some withdrew their children from school.”
He also revealed that some had returned from abroad to join the Nigerian workforce, only to end up stranded.
The affected recruits are appealing to the CBN Governor, President Bola Tinubu, and other stakeholders to intervene and resolve their situation as the economic hardship continues to bite.
