Former Chelsea defensive midfielder, John Obi Mikel, has criticized Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi following a controversial video he posted ahead of Nigeria’s 4-1 victory over Gabon.
In the video, Iwobi showcased the condition of the Super Eagles’ hotel in Morocco prior to the World Cup playoff matches.
Before the games against Gabon and DR Congo, the Super Eagles were accommodated at the Rive Hotel in Rabat.
Iwobi’s silent video sparked reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the Nigeria Football Federation's preparedness for the match.
Later, the Arsenal youth product clarified that he did not intend to criticize the hotel or the football authorities.
However, during an appearance on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel, who captained the Super Eagles during his playing career, stated:
“Once again, Alex Iwobi, that picture may have been taken innocently and shared without much thought.
“But as a player who has experienced living in quality accommodations in Europe, you should have known better, especially two days before the game.
“You shouldn’t have posted that. I read the comments; we don’t need that negativity surrounding us just before the playoff matches.
“If I were the captain, I would have advised him to remove it immediately. Take it off your Instagram; we don’t need that.”
Nigeria triumphed over Gabon 4-1 in extra time during the semi-final playoffs, while DR Congo defeated Cameroon in the other match.
The Super Eagles ultimately lost to DR Congo in the final playoff match on Sunday night.
