A non-profit organization, Yiaga Africa, has stated that the recently concluded Anambra State governorship election was heavily influenced by vote-buying.
Cynthia Mbamalu, the Director of Programmes for the group, made this remark on Monday during an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST.
According to DAILY POST, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the incumbent governor, Chukuwma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), as the winner of the election.
In response, Mbamalu noted, “The low voter turnout continues to facilitate politicians' ability to sway election results through financial inducements and impunity, rather than through genuine popularity.
“Votes are starting to hold significance; the official results announced reflect the votes cast across the polling units. However, the reality is that the votes counted are the ones that were purchased.
“Politicians are aware that the system is functioning as intended, leading them to invest heavily in spending as much money as they can.”
