Kataib Hezbollah had not claimed responsibility for the brutal snatching of the American journalist until now – though US and Iraqi officials had blamed the group.
The group said in a statement today that Shelly must leave Iraq immediately when she is released.
It claimed the decision to free the journalist came due to patriotic stances of the outgoing Iraqi PM Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.
Kataib Hezbollah did not give further details, but added that it was a one-time gesture that would not be repeated.
