UN applauds FCTA’s collaborative strategy to tackle sexual, gender-based violence

Published on May 06, 2025 at 06:51 PM

The United Nations has praised the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) for its integrated, multisectoral approach in addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the region.

Dr. Najat M’jid, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General on Violence against Children, delivered the commendation during her visit to the Awyetu Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) at Bwari General Hospital, Abuja. The centre, established in 2020 through the British Council under the European Union’s Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC) Programme, offers medical, psychological, and legal support to survivors of sexual violence—especially children and vulnerable populations.

Dr. M’jid lauded the collaborative efforts of various ministries and stakeholders working together to combat SGBV. “I am happy today because of what I have seen—many ministries are onboard supporting the fight against SGBV. The issue is not just for Women’s Affairs; it spans health, justice, and community involvement,”; she stated.

She emphasized that her visit was aimed at evaluating Nigeria’s progress on its commitment to ending violence against children and translating pledges into concrete services. “We want to see how we can move ahead, provide support, and ensure these commitments result in tangible actions that prevent and address all forms of violence,”; M’jid said.

While praising Nigeria’s dedication to the cause, the UN envoy stressed the importance of tackling causes, improving case detection and response, and ensuring accountability for perpetrators. She also highlighted the need to challenge societal norms that justify violence through poverty or culture.

Mrs. Adebayo Benjamins-Laniyi, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, echoed the call for stronger collaboration, noting that SGBV is a multifaceted issue that demands a united response. She referred to M’jid’s visit as a “positive disruption”; that reenergizes efforts to protect women and children.

Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, represented by Dr. Baba-Gana Adam, underscored the global importance of safeguarding children. She acknowledged ongoing challenges in sustaining the SARC’s operations, including funding gaps, staff training needs, and weak law enforcement collaboration.

Despite the hurdles, officials affirmed their commitment to enhancing the centre’s services and building stronger community-based prevention efforts across the FCT.
