The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria for the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory, Rev. Joseph Hayab, has stated that the warning issued by US President Donald Trump regarding the killings of Christians in Nigeria was misinterpreted.
Rev. Hayab made this remark during an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST.
He clarified that Trump did not threaten to invade Nigeria; rather, he urged the Federal Government to take decisive measures against the terrorists targeting Christians.
“Listening to what Trump said, he never indicated that he intended to engage in military action against Nigeria.
“There has been a distortion of his words. Trump simply stated, ‘Pursue these terrorists; if you fail to act, we may intervene.’ So, who is truly fearful of Trump coming to Nigeria?” Hayab questioned.
The cleric emphasized that recognizing the reality of the attacks on Christians is essential for the country's healing process.
He urged government officials to engage in sincere dialogue about the crisis instead of dismissing the pain of the victims.
“You cannot tell someone who is suffering and in pain that their cries are unfounded. Once we cease doing that, we can begin to find solutions. We must acknowledge that individuals came and killed Christians, and they did so under the guise of religion.
“They acted as Islamic fundamentalists. No Christian claims that Muslims collectively organized these attacks; however, Christians assert that fundamentalists and terrorists came in the name of Islam and committed these atrocities,” he added.
It is worth noting that Trump mentioned he had instructed his military department to intervene in Nigeria if the Nigerian government “continues to permit the killing of Christians.”
