Former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines and seasoned broadcaster, Ambassador Yemi Farounbi, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, labeling such a move as politically insensitive and diplomatically unnecessary.
It is important to note that Trump recently designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” due to the alleged persecution of Christians.
Trump also indicated that Nigeria might lose U.S. aid if it does not address its security issues.
In an exclusive interview on Frontline, a current affairs program on Eagle 102.5 FM, Ilese Ijebu, which was monitored by our correspondent in Abeokuta, Farounbi emphasized that Tinubu should avoid actions that make Nigeria appear to seek validation from leaders who show little respect for Africa’s dignity.
He asserted that Trump’s recent comments regarding Nigeria and his previous policies toward the continent demonstrate “a lack of respect for African nations.”
Farounbi attributed Trump’s recent stance to Nigeria’s inadequate diplomatic response to international criticism, describing the U.S. action as a predictable result of silence and inaction.
He stated, “Nigeria's president embodies the spirit of over 200 million people. He should not engage with anyone who has referred to African nations as ‘shithole countries.’ We must behave like a nation that values itself, rather than one that is pleading for recognition.”
“We cannot claim ignorance of this situation. For years, Catholic bishops from Benue and Plateau States have testified before the U.S. Congress and European Parliament, providing statistics on Christians killed by militants, yet Nigeria has not presented a strong counter-narrative.”
The veteran diplomat expressed concern that Nigeria has not had a fully-fledged ambassador in Washington for several years, leaving the country's image unprotected.
Farounbi noted that the international community frequently depends on reports and testimonies from advocacy groups and NGOs, many of which operate with biases or a limited understanding of Nigeria’s complexities.
“When you choose not to advocate for yourself, others will do it for you,” he cautioned. “And when they do, they will not portray your story accurately.”
He urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to bolster Nigeria’s embassies, empower diplomats, and ensure accurate representation of the nation’s challenges.
Additionally, Farounbi called on the Nigerian government to address insecurity not through propaganda but with justice, fairness, and respect for human rights.
