The Federal Government has initiated a nationwide citizenship campaign aimed at transforming patriotism from a mere feeling into consistent action, accountability, and nation-building.
The initiative, named “My Nigeria, My Responsibility,” was officially launched today at the State House in Abuja by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
This campaign, led by the Presidency through the Office of the Special Assistant to the President on Citizenship and Leadership, seeks to revive a culture of responsible citizenship, underscoring that every Nigerian plays a vital role in shaping the nation’s prosperity, global reputation, and democratic path.
Speaking on behalf of the President, the Minister described patriotism as ‘an active verb’, a collective obligation demonstrated through personal values, tax compliance, honesty in public discussions, and a unified commitment to national advancement.
“True patriotism is the daily decision to take responsibility for our nation’s narrative, its growth, and its reputation,” he stated, adding, “Nigeria’s future is not solely in the hands of a few, but in the collective actions of 200 million citizens.”
The Minister also emphasized President Tinubu’s long-standing commitment to democracy, noting that the President’s political journey embodies the very essence of responsible citizenship that the campaign aims to promote across the nation.
He outlined the administration’s significant policy reforms, including the elimination of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange reforms, tax justice initiatives, and the digitalization of revenue mobilization, linking these directly to citizen responsibility and collective prosperity.
“The challenges are real, but they represent the pain of healing, not decay,” he explained, detailing how reforms have significantly increased monthly FAAC allocations to states and local governments, providing essential resources to address public needs such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security.
He described tax compliance as a civic duty that directly supports national development: “Patriotism is reflected in the taxes you pay. When you contribute your fair share, you are directly investing in your child's education, the road your business relies on, and the security that protects your home.”
Idris also announced that in February 2026, the Ministry will launch the National Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Institute, a significant public education platform designed to equip citizens with the tools to verify information, combat misinformation, and engage ethically online.
“We must not weaponize falsehood. In this digital era, truthful communication is a patriotic obligation,” the Minister emphasized.
He urged citizens to embody the values outlined in the newly adopted Citizens’ Charter of National Values: integrity, patriotism, diligence, tolerance, and excellence.
In conclusion, the Minister called on every Nigerian to embrace the campaign as a national commitment to responsible nation-building.
“The President is providing the framework of stability and vision; the rest of us must take up the brush. Let us collaboratively create the masterpiece of a new Nigeria through our values, our taxes, our stories, and our actions. My Nigeria, My Responsibility.”
