THE Davis Cup tie between Morocco and Colombia descended into chaos as bottles were thrown by spectators on to the court .

Nicolas Mejia, 25, of Colombia needed a police escort after he had bottles launched at him.

He provoked the Moroccan crowd, following his victory over Reda Bennani, 18, by putting his finger to his lips.

World No177 Mejia beat Bennani 2-1 in sets after 6-1 and 6-2 triumphs in sets one and three, giving Colombia victory in the .

The Colombian shushed the Moroccan crowd after his victory, sparking madness on the clay as bottles rained on to the court.

He then confronted some of the Moroccan coaches on the sidelines before celebrating on the court.

The angry home crowd in Casablanca responded by throwing empty water bottles on to the clay court.

Mejia’s celebrations also upset Morocco’s bench, as several disagreements blew up between Bennani and Mejia’s teams.

Both players required a police escort after the tie.

Mejia has since taken to X to explain his actions towards the Moroccans.

He said: “You don’t know what happened. All the time people threaten me and my family.

“Morrocan team on my face and trying to make people scream at me more every point.”

This was in response to a post from X user Tennis Legend who claimed that “If you turn up the heat, you have to accept the backlash. That’s the game, and it’s part of the charm of high-stakes encounters.”

Mejia claimed that the Moroccans showed “Zero fair play” during his clash with Bennani.

He concluded by taking aim at Tennis Legend’s report: “Better get your facts before talking what you don’t know”.

Mejia’s victory meant Colombia secured qualification for the World Group play-offs in September.
