The answer is to mulch your lawn or vegetable plot, which involves adding a layer of material to supress weeds and protect from extreme conditions.

There are many ways to add mulch to your garden, and while you can buy material to use from your local garden centre, you can also make your own.

Grass clippings are a great – and free- option, as well as dead leaves.

You can even make use of old cardboard boxes to keep your plants safe and stop weeds in their tracks.

However, it’s important to note different materials work better for different areas of your garden.

For your flower boarders, consider shredded leaves or bark. And for your driveway woodchips or stones work well, but could destroy your lawn if used there instead.

To further help, Pavemaster Driveways have shared some advice to remove weeds and stop them coming back using this method.

The experts told Express.co.uk : “You can lay down a layer of mulch or install fabric across your driveway to prevent seeds from germinating.

“This works particularly well on gravel driveways, where the barrier stops sunlight from reaching the soil and prevents weed growth.”

How to does mulching work?

Mulching generally uses organic material to surround plants, and although it’s typically used to enhance the condition of the soil, it has the added benefit of destroying weeds.

This is because weeds thrive in spots with plenty of sunlight, but blocks the light source.

Mulch is also a great method to use since it can be utilised across your garden, including driveways, patios, boarders and your lawn.

Revive your lawn

Another simple way to mulch is best utilised during then hotter months is to .

Not only does this help recycle the nutrients back into the soil, but it also helps the soil to better retain its moisture by slowing down dryness caused by evaporation.

Anyone concerned as to how long the clippings stay sitting on the lawn, they decompose and break down quite quickly.

That’s because when grass is cut with a mulching mower or regular mower with a sharp blade, the clippings are usually small enough to filter down into the grass and decompose, typically within a few weeks.

This process also acts as a natural fertiliser.

The clippings can also stop weeds from growing as they block the sunlight and prevent weed seeds from germinating.

This practice, also known as “grasscycling,” is an effective and environmentally friendly method for managing weeds.
