However, the club were found guilty of multiple breaches of rules after being caught spying on opponents, resulting in their expulsion from the playoffs – a decision confirmed following an appeal.

Southampton intern analyst William Salt went and spied on teams, with Boro – who caught the spy – Oxford and Ipswich all being confirmed cases.

Southampton stars have been left furious with the turn of events and are said to be considering legal action over loss of earnings and seeing if they can escape their contracts for a breach of trust.

But players have now started to break their silence in the fallout of the scandal, starting with hero Leo Scienza.

The 27-year-old took to to post a lengthy statement expressing his feelings on the matter.

He said: “Disappointment, anger, sadness … It’s difficult to find the right words for what we’re all feeling right now.

“What has happened over the last days is heartbreaking.. for the club, for every player in this dressing room, and above all for our supporters. A moment like this should never end the way it did…

“We gave everything for this dream. Day after day, sacrifice after sacrifice, always believing we could bring this club back to where it belongs.

“For me, the dream of playing in the Premier League was something I fought for with everything I had. That’s why this pain cuts so deep.”

The Brazilian winger soon saw that sentiment echoed by team-mate Kuryu Matsuki.

On his own social media page the 23-year-old Japanese midfielder said: “It’s difficult to put my feelings into words right now, but from the very beginning of the season we set ourselves the goal of earning promotion to the Premier League, and every single day we fought together while supporting one another.

“And without a doubt it was all of you – our fans and supporters – who stood by us until the very end and gave us the strength to keep moving forward.
