, 84, was famously sacked by St Mirren in 1978 — a year after leading them to the Scottish First Division title — for reportedly flirting with next club Aberdeen.
St Mirren’s are the only side to have sacked Sir Alex during his iconic career in the dugout.
And it paved the way for him to join Aberdeen after securing 74 wins in 169 outings.
But there were clearly no hard feelings as the Scot lapped up the atmosphere on Saturday night.
Ferguson watched on as St Mirren were thrashed 5-0 at home by Motherwell.
Yet the result did little to dampen his spirits on a cold night.
Sir Alex could yet take in more football when old side United face Everton on Monday.

Fergie had been promoting United in the lucrative gig but continues to show up for the Red Devils around the country.
He is sure to be delighted at progress as interim boss.
The former United midfielder has impressed since replacing Ruben Amorim.
And Carrick is hopeful of landing the job on a permanent basis this summer.
He said: “For me, it’s the ultimate role. I’m really enjoying it, I love what I’m doing. I’m fortunate.
“I feel privileged to be in the position I am, but it’s not the fact that I believe I can do it, and I’m here to do it.
“I said it when I came in – there’s the sentimental side of that… of understanding the role and coming through the club and being here and loving the club and being a supporter and all that side of it is one thing.
“But, actually, I’m here to do a job now and to make a good team and be successful.
“I don’t decide how long that’s going to be, but I love being here and while I’m here, I’ll give everything I can. And I always plan for the long-term future for the benefit of the football club. That’s how I believe it should be.”
