Former Premier League keeper saves penalty but gets booked for celebrating in referee’s face in Champions League

FORMER Premier League star Simon Mignolet was booked for celebrating a penalty save in the referee’s face.

The ex- and ace lined up between the sticks for Club Brugge’s 4-1 Champions League group stage win over last night.

But things got off to a disastrous start for the Belgians when they conceded a ninth-minute penalty.

Brugge were left outraged by the decision, which they felt was harsh.

Yet , 37, defied his age to keep out the resulting spot-kick with a terrific save.

The stopper roared in delight after turning the ball round the post with his finger tips.

And he then proceeded to celebrate in the face of the referee.

However, Mignolet’s joy was short-lived as he received a yellow card for his actions.

The veteran was also unable to bask in his side’s victory after coming off the pitch injured just 10 minutes later.

Fans certainly found Mignolet’s eventful role amusing.

One said: “Simply brilliant.”

Another declared: “That’s a bold thing to do.”

One noted: “Clear Sunday league behaviour.”

Another boomed: “Lived an entire career arc in less than 20 minutes.”

One reasoned: “That’s real comedy.”

Another added: “Iconic 19 minutes.”

Mignolet is in his seventh season at Brugge, having joined from Liverpool for £6million in 2019.

He has since played 296 times, leading Brugge to four league titles.

Before that, Mignolet spent six years at Anfield, playing 204 times while winning the 2019 Champions League.

He also starred for Sunderland between 2010 and 2013, featuring 101 times for the Black Cats.
