The acting National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, took office on Friday, just hours after the Supreme Court of Nigeria dismissed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s appeal concerning the leadership of the opposition party.

During his remarks at the party’s national Secretariat in Abuja, Prof. Gombe stated that the apex court's ruling is not just a victory for the SDP, but for all political parties in Nigeria.

He emphasized that the Supreme Court’s decision on Friday illustrates that the nation's judiciary remains the last hope for the common citizen.

“Today (Friday) marks a historic occasion, not only for the SDP and other political parties in Nigeria but also for democracy, our entire electoral process, and the rule of law. What we are witnessing today at this honorable court of highest jurisdiction demonstrates that the judiciary continues to be the last hope for individuals and institutions alike that seek justice, equity, and fairness,” he said.

He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to honor the Supreme Court's decision.

“I therefore encourage INEC to approach this decision with clarity of purpose and acknowledge that only the Constitution of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the constitutions of political parties take precedence over any administrative considerations or conveniences,” he stated.

He expressed that the nation's electoral body should refrain from interfering in the internal matters of the SDP and cease interactions with unauthorized entities regarding the party.

“Stop interfering in the internal affairs of political parties, as this has long been resolved by the honorable Supreme Court.
“That INEC ceases any dealings whatsoever with suspended or expelled members of the party,” he added.

“That INEC promptly remove the name of suspended and expelled National Chairman Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabiam and replace him with the duly recognized Acting National Chairman by the NWC, Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe,” he emphasized.

This announcement follows the Supreme Court's ruling on Friday regarding the leadership of the SDP, which was deemed to lack merit.

DAILY POST reports that both the Appellate Court and the Federal High Court had previously ruled in favor of Gombe’s leadership within the SDP.
