Ruben Amorim has revealed that he intends to finally modify his formation at Manchester United.

This comes despite his previous assertion that “not even the Pope” could convince him to abandon it.

Amorim, 40, has consistently adhered to his preferred 3-4-3 formation throughout his time at Old Trafford.

In fact, he has utilized a back three in all 59 matches since taking over from Erik ten Hag just over a year ago.

In September, when asked if the club's management might urge him to adjust his strategy due to a poor start to the season, the beleaguered manager responded: “No, no, no. No one.”

“This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. So, I will not change that.”

However, he is not “fixated” on his 3-4-3 shape in his quest for victories.

Signs of change emerged on Monday.

As detailed in the report, Amorim adjusted the formation to a back three with wing-backs out of possession, transitioning to a back four when attacking.

He has now openly admitted that he might start with a flat back four for the first time.

However, this would only be a temporary adjustment due to player unavailability while they are away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The duo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui, who typically play as right wing-backs, are on international duty with the Ivory Coast and Morocco, respectively.

When asked if this could necessitate a change, Amorim replied: “It will depend on how we are performing that particular week.”

“But if we need to switch to a back four, we will switch to a back four.”

Then, acknowledging his surprising admission, he joked: “I was saving this revelation for last.”

Amorim will also be without key forward Bryan Mbeumo due to AFCON, which concludes on January 18.

Centre-backs Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt are injured, and Casemiro is suspended for the match at Villa Park.

When asked about the possibility of new signings, including Ruben Neves, Tyler Adams, and Conor Gallagher, Amorim stated: “We will only pursue players we believe will be part of our future.”

“This is not about making hasty decisions to cope with the absence of three players for AFCON.”

“Even if we consider bringing in a player, it may not necessarily be for the position we need at that moment.”

“We will aim to secure players now—and at the end of the season—who are ideal for our future. It’s possible that we can achieve that.”
