, 36, finished the second round an , well ahead of his rivals.

He went round the course for the second round as he bettered his first round efforts of five-under par.

But it is no accident as he has been making sure to get plenty of practice in on the iconic course.

He revealed that he has been regularly flying back and forth from the course on his private jet.

McIlroy had been taking flights from his to and back for dinner with wife Erica and school trips with daughter Poppy.

He said: “I honestly just don’t like the three tournaments leading up to this event.

“I’d rather come up here … I did a couple of days where I dropped Poppy to school.

“Then flew up here, played, landed back home and had dinner with her or had dinner with Erica.”

The trip from his Florida base to Augusta is no mean feat with the flight taking up to two hours there and back.

The distance between McIlroy’s home in Jupiter, Florida and the Augusta course is 530miles.

In late 2024, the star bought a multi-million-dollar Gulfstream private jet for £28.8million.

The luxurious jets can sit up to 19 passengers, and feature plush sofas and living areas where leg room is guaranteed.

Reports suggest that the jet is not cheap to run, with running costs of up to £3,000 an hour.

This means the two two-hour flights a day could rack up bills of up to £12,000 for McIlroy.

Four hours of flying time in a private jet can produce up to eight to 16 metric tonnes of CO2.

The Transport Environment has claimed that private jets are the most polluting form of transport.

A single hour in one of the aircraft can emit more CO2 than the average person does in a year.
