Residents of Tegina District in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State have claimed that more than 30 people have been killed in the renewed communal clashes between Fulani and Kamuku communities, with several others injured and thousands displaced.
The residents alleged that many victims were burnt to death when attackers set houses ablaze during the violence, which they said has intensified since June 24.
Speaking with journalists in Minna, a resident, Alhaji Isah Tanko Tegina, lamented what he described as the failure of the federal, state and local governments, as well as traditional institutions, to stop the recurring violence.
According to him, the clashes have continued to claim innocent lives and destroy property, forcing many residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
“The clash is claiming the lives of innocent citizens day by day, with the government and traditional institutions showing insensitivity to the matter,” the resident stated.
He appealed to security agencies and all relevant authorities to intervene urgently to prevent further bloodshed and restore lasting peace to the affected communities.
Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Command had earlier confirmed 18 deaths in the crisis. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the violence is linked to a lingering dispute between the two communities, adding that joint police and military personnel have been deployed while a reconciliation committee is working to end the crisis.
Police said investigations are ongoing and urged residents to remain calm and avoid reprisals.
