The Nigeria Police Force has addressed the concerns raised by the Nigerian Bar Association regarding the upcoming enforcement of tinted-glass permits.
According to DAILY POST, in light of the planned reintroduction of the suspended motor vehicle tinted glass permit by the Nigeria Police, the NBA has threatened to pursue contempt proceedings against the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin.
The association referenced previous court orders that halted the enforcement of this contentious policy.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, the police maintained that, contrary to the NBA’s claims, the Force has no intention of violating any court order, asserting that the policy is legal, security-driven, and adheres to court protocols.
The statement, signed by Force spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin, emphasized that NBA president Afam Osigwe misrepresented the situation and falsely implied that the Force was operating outside judicial oversight.
The Force Public Relations Officer also stated that the suggestion that the policy is a revenue-generating initiative is “incorrect and misleading.”
He clarified that the Nigeria Police Force is not a revenue-generating entity, noting that the Force is “authorized by law to receive funds that arise incidentally in the execution of its statutory duties. Section 26(1)(f) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended) explicitly recognizes this authority. This legal stance is neither new nor controversial.
“To balance accessibility for legitimate applicants with the necessities of national security and operational sustainability, the Federal Government approved the Police Specialized Services Automation Project, which received the necessary endorsement from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in July 2022.
“The project is being executed under a lawful Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement sanctioned by the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, ICRC Act, with the Nigeria Police Force collaborating with a licensed Information Technology infrastructure provider.”
