THIS is the hair-raising moment a pilot flew dangerously low over his own childhood home during his final flight before retirement.

Witnesses caught the terrifying ordeal on video, where the plane can first be seen appearing above nearby hills.

The pilot then navigated the 757 to fly alarmingly close to the rooftops of the small village town on the Westman Islands, or Vestmannaeyjar.

Soaring directly above , the plane left residents alarmed and uneasy.

The flight had flown into from Frankfurt.

Linda Gunnarsdottir, chief flight officer at Icelandair, told local media outlets that the pilot had taken a sightseeing flight over his childhood home without permission or knowledge of the company.

It has since been revealed that the pilot pulled the stunt right before landing his final flight before retirement.

The airline has since referred the incident to and the Icelandic Transport Authority.

An has since been launched into the chilling ordeal.

Gunnarsdottir said “everything is very rigid in work processes, checklists and other things” in the aviation industry.

“What we do in normal passenger flights — it doesn’t fall within that framework,” she added.

Flyovers are a tradition associated with military aircraft, which typically carry a maximum of five passengers.

Such displays are usually held during events including celebrations in the UK.

They are not necessarily carried out at such a low altitude.

Flyovers are also not the norm for commercial pilots flying Boeing 757s that can seat about 200 people.

Less risky retirement traditions — including a water cannon salute from ground control staff — have also been documented.

The airline expressed regret over the incident.

“We apologise to the residents of Vestmannaeyjar if they have been disturbed,” Gunnarsdottir told the local outlet Visir.

The Sun has contacted Icelandair for comment.
