Former Jigawa State Governor and one of the founding members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sule Lamido, has cautioned that the party may need to form alliances if the current reconciliation efforts do not succeed.

Lamido made this statement on Monday while meeting with PDP stakeholders and party leaders from Jigawa State at his office in Kano.

He emphasized the urgent need for reconciliation to prevent further decline of the party.

He reminded party members to remain patient until December 9, when a decision regarding the status of the PDP’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, is expected. He mentioned that this deadline is part of broader consultations aimed at restoring stability within the party.

Lamido revealed that he had discussions with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Senate President Bukola Saraki on strategies to engage PDP governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in reconciliation efforts. Some meetings took place at Saraki’s residence.

“We have consulted with all of them and requested their cooperation. We will convene again. Do not worry, you will have your chance to vote. There is still no party like the PDP. We must not let our personal egos destroy it,” Lamido stated.

He cautioned that if reconciliation efforts do not succeed, the party will have no option but to consider alliances, rather than coalitions, a move he believes could significantly alter Nigeria's political landscape.

“If reconciliation fails, alliances—not coalitions—will become necessary. There is a distinction between an alliance and a coalition. If you want to make a name in Nigeria, you should join the PDP,” he added.

The former governor also expressed concern over the PDP’s poor performance in Kano State, noting that the party received only about 15,000 votes in the last general elections.

He criticized the defection of the party’s former vice-presidential candidate to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it a significant setback.

Lamido further alleged that internal conflicts within the PDP have benefited the APC, claiming that political alignments in the South-West are influenced by tribal sentiments favoring the ruling party.

Earlier, the Jigawa State Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Babandi Ibrahim, stated that the meeting was a continuation of previous discussions aimed at resolving the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.

“This meeting is a follow-up to our earlier discussions, particularly concerning resolutions submitted by stakeholders regarding the party's future,” Babandi said.

He acknowledged the uncertainty facing the party and recalled that Lamido had previously urged patience while efforts to resolve the leadership impasse were underway.

“You invited us to come, and we are here. As far as we are concerned, the party is in limbo. Up to this moment, Damagum and Anyanwu remain on the INEC platform as the recognized leaders of the party. We are here today before you, Sir,” he stated.
