One disgruntled local says they were bounced “back and forth” between agencies after reporting the issue, according to Manchester Evening News .

The resident said the companies didn’t want to get their hands dirty and take responsibility while residents were forced to walk in the road to avoid the mess.

“It’s a residential street, loads of kids use the road to go and from , there’s a park near us, we’ve got to walk in the road to get around the pavement,” a resident said.

“I’ve not gotten close enough to smell it, but I’m sure when it gets to hot weather it’s going to be worse.”

They claimed flies were swarming and that it was not “nice or pleasant” to behold.

United Utilities, responsible for the water network in the area, say they weren’t initially aware the problem.

They said a landlord had hired a private contractor to look at the issue believing it was a problem with private drainage.

But they then failed to inform the that the issue was on their network.

United Utilities apologised to residents and said waste on the street had been removed.

A spokesperson, said: “Our teams responded to reports of a blocked sewer once we’d been notified of the issue.

“The blockage has been removed and the area has been cleaned. We’d like to apologise to the residents for the issue.”

A Manchester City Council spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a burst pipe on private land in Manchester, which led to the unfortunate expulsion of waste from the private land on to the highway.

“United Utilities were able to clear up the waste. Our team was also on site to investigate the matter.

“We want to urge anyone who sees any concerns of this nature to report them directly through our Contact Centre or via our online reporting services.”

It’s not the only instance of a burst pipe leading to chaos on the streets either.

Last September, spilled out of a broken pipe leaving a residential street in London completely submerged.

Homes were evacuated along the road in Marylebone, central , after the water main erupted in the early hours today.

One local told how their windows had been smashed by the eruption, adding they had been forced to “swim out” of their basement room.

The previous month, a water pipe exploding causing £10,000 worth of damage to a property.
