The Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has issued a strong warning to principals, vice principals, and teachers in public secondary schools throughout the state, advising them to refrain from collecting any unauthorized fees from students.
The Commission's Chairman, Biodun Sanyaolu, delivered this warning on Monday during a television program in Abeokuta, emphasizing that any school administrator or teacher found guilty of such actions would face severe penalties.
According to DAILY POST, the state government has indefinitely suspended the principals of Ilugun High School, Elega — Mrs. Olukoga Adeyemi Alaba (Junior) and Mrs. Ladipo Olabisi Temitope (Senior) — due to the collection of illegal fees, which resulted in a protest and, tragically, the death of a student last Tuesday.
Chairman Sanyaolu highlighted that the Abiodun-led administration is firmly committed to its free education policy, ensuring that students in public schools do not need to pay any fees to receive quality education.
He clarified that the current administration, as part of its educational reform agenda, has made it clear that no student in public primary or secondary schools should be charged any form of levy.
Sanyaolu affirmed that the state government’s educational agenda focuses on delivering quality education that promotes academic excellence, stating that any actions that could jeopardize this goal will not be tolerated.
The TESCOM chairman also encouraged teachers and school staff to utilize the whistleblower platform to report any unethical practices within the school environment, reiterating the Commission’s dedication to ensuring transparency and accountability in the teaching and learning process throughout the state.
Regarding the readiness for implementing the new national curriculum recently introduced by the Federal Government, Sanyaolu revealed that the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, TESCOM, and other relevant agencies are collaborating to ensure its smooth implementation.
He also noted that TESCOM has taken proactive measures to ensure equitable distribution of teachers across secondary schools in the state, highlighting that the recently engaged Ogun TEACh interns will further enhance the existing teaching workforce for improved performance.
In conclusion, he praised school administrators, Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs), and Old Students’ Associations for their ongoing cooperation with the government, urging them to continue their collaborative efforts in fostering discipline among students.
