The Ogun State Government has made a significant advancement in enhancing reproductive health financing with the introduction and distribution of the State Family Planning (FP) Finance Tracker. This initiative aims to improve transparency, accountability, and sustainability regarding family planning funding in the State.
The event took place during a one-day stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). It gathered key stakeholders from various Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, development partners, civil society organizations (CSOs), the media, and other relevant participants in the reproductive health sector.
During the meeting, the Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, characterized the FP Finance Tracker as a strategic instrument intended to provide clear and evidence-based insights into family planning financing in Ogun State.
She mentioned that the tracker would record budget allocations, fund releases, actual expenditures, and existing funding gaps within the family planning program, thereby facilitating more informed planning and policy decisions.
She further clarified that the main goal of the dissemination was to present and validate the findings from the Ogun State FP Finance Tracker, while also enhancing stakeholders’ understanding of the flow of family planning funds within the state’s health system.
In his goodwill message, a representative from UNFPA, Dr. Akinkunmi Akinbajo, highlighted that sustainable domestic financing is essential for ensuring continuous access to family planning services, especially for women, adolescents, and underserved populations.
He also pointed out that although donor support has been crucial, states must increasingly take ownership of financing reproductive health programs to ensure long-term impact.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Healthcare Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, stated that the forum was designed to encourage robust multi-stakeholder dialogue on the sustainability of family planning financing and to identify priority actions necessary for enhancing FP budget performance in the State.
Dr. Ogunsola emphasized that the FP Finance Tracker is not merely a report but a decision-making tool that promotes transparency in resource allocation and utilization. He noted that it would strengthen accountability and assist the government and partners in identifying gaps and opportunities for improved financing of family planning services.
