The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has warned politicians and political parties in Taraba State against using hate speech and defamatory language as campaigns ramp up for the upcoming local government council elections.
This advisory was issued on Wednesday by the state NOA Director, Mallam Zakaria Muhammad, during the formal launch of a voter education campaign in preparation for the elections scheduled for November 8.
The Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission has planned for the elections to take place across the state’s 16 local government areas.
“It is crucial that we caution against hate speech and defamatory remarks during the campaigns by potential candidates.
Campaign messages should be clear and adhere to democratic principles, free from personal attacks on opponents or political parties,” Muhammad stated.
He stressed that elections should not be perceived as a “do-or-die affair” and urged candidates and their supporters to accept the results peacefully or pursue legal remedies instead of resorting to violence or self-help.
Muhammad underscored the significance of voter education in ensuring that citizens are well-informed about their rights and responsibilities during the elections.
The NOA director encouraged all residents of Taraba to not only participate in voting but to do so peacefully and responsibly.
He also reassured the public of the agency’s ongoing collaboration with key stakeholders, including security agencies, media, traditional and religious leaders, and youth groups, to guarantee a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Commending TASIEC for its efforts thus far, Muhammad praised the commission’s transparency in preparing for the election and reaffirmed NOA’s commitment to monitoring the entire process to ensure its credibility.
He also commended Governor Agbu Kefas for his steadfast dedication to democratic governance, particularly his initiative to end the era of caretaker leadership at the local government level.
“By facilitating timely local council elections, the governor has shown adherence to constitutional provisions and has helped restore public confidence in grassroots governance,” Muhammad noted.
