The Presidency has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for expressing support for the upcoming protest organized by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, advocating for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement from the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Onanuga, the presidency labeled Atiku’s position as opportunistic and irresponsible for someone of his stature.
DAILY POST recalls that Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general elections, announced that the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration is scheduled for October 20 at 7 a.m., branding it a “historic” protest aimed at advocating for Kanu’s release.
Onanuga stressed that although the judicial process in Kanu’s case may seem slow, the administration is dedicated to ensuring due process and upholding the rule of law.
“I am surprised that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who often acts opportunistically, has endorsed the planned mob action. As a statesman, he should understand that matters of justice are resolved in the courtroom, not in the streets.
“While the wheels of justice can sometimes turn slowly, in part due to Kanu’s legal representatives, Nnamdi Kanu will ultimately receive the justice he deserves for the alleged offenses,” Onanuga stated.
