Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has extended her congratulations to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on her return to the Senate.
Ezekwesili urged the leadership and members of the National Assembly to put an end to all forms of hostility and retribution against her.
The former Minister expressed this sentiment in a post on her X account titled “Memo to the Nigerian Senate and 107 Senators @NGRSenate.”
She characterized Akpoti-Uduaghan’s reinstatement as a triumph for justice, stating that the lawmaker has become “a symbol of strength and resilience essential for combating injustices inflicted on citizens by those who misuse public power.”
Ezekwesili encouraged the Senate to restore all rights and privileges to the Kogi Central senator, including her office, staff, and committee responsibilities, so that she can perform her duties effectively.
She remarked that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension was widely perceived as an act of injustice, conveying a negative message about how the Senate treats outspoken members, especially women.
“The Senate must cease all hostilities and covert punishments. There should be no further attempts to marginalize, frustrate, or humiliate her for simply fulfilling her responsibilities,” she stated.
Ezekwesili additionally called on the upper chamber to set a more positive example by addressing internal issues with maturity and fairness, demonstrating respect for the public mandate.
In her view, the reinstatement provides the Senate with a chance to showcase accountability, restraint, and respect for democratic principles.
“The Senate must recognize that true power is demonstrated not through intimidation but through transparent actions, fairness, restraint, and accountability,” she concluded.
Ezekwesili finished by urging senators to ensure that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations against the Senate President are addressed fairly, cautioning that the public is observing and history will determine whether the 11th Senate opts for “vindictiveness or justice.”
