The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, asserts that Nigeria cannot overcome insurgency solely through military actions.
Kukah expressed this view while discussing ‘Scars: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum’, a new book written by Lucky Irabor, the former Chief of Defence Staff.
The Bishop emphasized that Nigeria's dependence on military strategies and ongoing counter-insurgency initiatives has not yielded enduring peace because Boko Haram embodies an ideology rather than just a militant threat.
“For years, we have implemented Operation Lafiya Dole, Operation Restore Order, Operation Hadin Kai, Operation Safe Haven, and many others.
“Yet, when one operation fails, another is initiated. These efforts have not eradicated the insurgency because you cannot combat an idea with weapons alone,” he stated.
What does Bishop Kukah believe about military operations against insurgency?
Bishop Kukah believes that military operations alone are insufficient to defeat insurgency, as they cannot address the ideological roots of the problem.
What has been the outcome of Nigeria's military operations against Boko Haram?
The outcomes have been ineffective in achieving lasting peace, as repeated military strategies have not resolved the underlying ideological issues posed by Boko Haram.
