A MET cop killed a pregnant woman and her unborn baby in an 80mph crash while driving on the wrong side of the road, a court heard.

Mariam Ahmed, 38, was in her Polo when the tragedy took place in Eltham, South East London, in October 2024.

PC Chris Johnson and ex-PC Danny Tomkins appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today over her death.

Catherine Farrelly KC, prosecuting, said both men were on duty and were driving separate vehicles over 70mph on a 30mph road moments before the crash.

Johnson, 56, was driving the vehicle involved in the collision, and reached “somewhere in the region of 80mph”, the court heard.

Ms Farrelly said: “He appeared to have accelerated to the maximum capability of the vehicle he was driving.”

At the point of impact, Johnson was driving at around 50mph, “breaking to the maximum”, she added.

Tomkins was driving a second vehicle which was not involved in the collision when he overtook Mariam at 78mph, the court heard.

The mum-to-be was travelling in the same direction on the same road as the officers and had indicated to turn off before the crash.

Ms Farrelly said: “The two of them were on duty as part of a pre-planned deployment targeting vehicles that were suspected to be involved in criminal activity.”

Johnson, who is attached to the Met’s Taskforce, is charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Tomkins, who was attached to the same unit at the time of the incident but has since left, is accused of dangerous driving.

The two men were granted unconditional bail to next appear at the Old Bailey on June 25.
