The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has warned the Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) of hospitals across the nation against hiring or retaining Medical Doctors who have not renewed their professional licenses.
Additionally, the MDCN urged parents of young Doctors not to distract their children who are currently completing their housemanship in hospitals.
The Registrar of MDCN, Professor Fatima, made this statement on Wednesday at Gregory University, Uturu, Abia, during the 4th Induction ceremony for 46 new Doctors from the University, where Dr. Tikyaa Esther Terdoo was recognized as the best graduating medical student.
Professor Kyari, represented by Tijjani Mandaka, emphasized that it is unprofessional for hospitals to permit any Doctor with an expired license to practice or to protect them from regulatory scrutiny.
“All specialized fields must be registered before practicing. Ensure that you renew your license in all your endeavors,” she stated.
Regarding CMDs, the MDCN Registrar remarked, “Before hiring a specialist, that specialist must present an additional qualification registered by the Council and a current practicing license prior to employment.”
While commending Gregory University Uturu for graduating the 46 new Doctors, the MDCN Registrar encouraged them to complete all registration processes for certification and to maintain humility towards Senior Doctors during their housemanship.
She advised the new Doctors to recognize when to seek a second opinion from a senior colleague on a patient’s case and when to refer a patient, warning that any unprofessional handling of a patient’s situation could lead to complaints from relatives and severe penalties from the MDCN.
In their addresses, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Cele Njoku, and the institution's founder, Professor Gregory Ibe, urged the new Doctors to uphold the highest standards in medical practice by combining their skills with a profound sense of empathy for their patients.

During their Physician’s Oath, the 46 new Medical Doctors pledged to practice with dignity and integrity, respecting the confidentiality entrusted to them by patients, even after the patient’s death.
