United raced into the lead inside the first five minutes thanks to Shaw’s superb finish.
The England left-back chested down a ball inside the box before expertly guiding it into the corner as Old Trafford erupted.
United then came close to making it 2-0 as Bryan Mbeumo smashed a shot onto the woodwork and Casemiro failed to convert from the rebound.
Forest did get their equaliser just after half time when Morato headed home from close range after Elliot Anderson’s cross.
But just moments later United retook the lead shortly after as Matheus Cunha bundled home from Mbeumo’s rebounded effort, which was given after a lengthy review for a possible handball.
Mbeumo blazed over with another poor miss in the game despite having just the keeper to beat.
But he did eventually get his goal by tapping home from six yards after Bruno Fernandes provided a historic 20th assist.
Forest pulled one back from Gibbs-White minutes later after he guided a first-time finish into the corner.
