A MAN has been killed on a train line after escaping a custody van travelling from a police station to court.
The man, in his 40s, escaped the vehicle while it was stopped on the A1 motorway, police said.
Emergency services were then called to a casualty on the tracks at Welwyn North Railway station in Hertfordshire.
Cops responding to the call said formal identification of the casualty had not yet taken place but said the family of the man had been informed of the tragedy.
A file has been prepared for the coroner.
Hertfordshire Police has referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
How to get help
EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide
It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.
It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.
And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.
Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.
