Discover Italy's Hidden Gem: The 'Maldives of Italy' with Flights Starting at Just £20!

THERE is a place in Italy that people say looks more like the Maldives – yet Brits tend to overlook it.

When it comes to an Italian holiday, most Brits head to places like Rome and Venice, or even the island of .

Yet Salento, in the heel of the ‘boot’ of Italy, is often nicknamed the Maldives of .

One of the most well-known parts of Salento is Brindisi, a port city on the east coast, and where most flights go to.

However, the white sandy beaches and bright blue waters elsewhere in the region have led to its moniker.

One of the most beautiful is Pescoluse, a seaside resort with one of the clearest beaches.

While it isn’t a hidden beach, you are more likely to be joined by local families than many Brits.

One writer told the Telegraph : “Even though we visited during May half term, we only saw a handful of other British families.”

A tourist backed the Maldives claims, writing: “The landscape is beautiful, with turquoise blue water and white sand.

“The water temperature is great and has a blue flag.”

Another said: “Beautiful crystal clear and blue/blue water and golden sand… a paradise!

“Fully reflects the name ‘of Salento’.”

The beaches also aren’t as expensive as other parts of Italy with it costing just €25 (£22) for two sunbeds, an umbrella and parking (or just €5 (£4.41) for parking).

Other beautiful beaches in the area include Spiaggia delle Maldive del Salento as well as Lido 77.

You might even spot some turtles along the coastline, with breeding season between June and September.

The best way to get to the beaches is to fly to Brindisi – Salento Airport, with direct UK flights taking around three hours.

Some of the cheapest flights are with , costing £20 each way, although you can also fly with British Airways and easyJet.

From the airport, Pescoluse beach is around 90 minutes by car.

Don’t expect any big hotel chains, although you can find a number of three-star and four-star lining the coast.

This isn’t the only spot in Europe which has been compared to the Maldives.

has been compared to the long-haul holiday destination, due to the overwater beds and blue waters found in Sarande.

Otherwise in a resort on the island of Crete that has swim up rooms just like the Maldives.
