ACTION at the Brazilian MotoGP was delayed after a SINKHOLE opened up at the start/finish line.

Following qualifying for the race, a serious issue on the track was spotted and needed urgent attention.

Groups of people could be seen crowding around a which left one person waist-deep in the tarmac trying to make repairs.

Some of the track was dug up to solve problems caused by extreme rain at Goiania.

Fans were left without anything to watch as questions over whether the sprint race would be able to take place arose.

A statement from a MotoGP spokesperson, reported by The Race , reads: “Due to the heavy rain recently suffered in the region, an issue in the track surface has arisen on the main straight.

“The FIM and , together with the local promoter, are working to solve this problem as soon as possible.

“Due to the time required to complete these repairs, when track activity resumes the next session live on track will be the MotoGP Tissot Sprint.

“Qualifying for the Moto2 and Moto3 classes have been postponed until further notice.

“More information will be provided at 14:00 local time [17:00 GMT, Saturday].”

Safety officer Tome Alfonso has also been quoted as saying the issue is “a depression in the track surface caused by soil movement.”

He added: “It is off the racing line and we’re already repairing the problem.

“If everything goes well, we should be able to have the MotoGP Sprint today.”

It is claimed that a “crisis meeting” was held by organisers to find an appropriate plan of action.

This is the first weekend back for at Goiania in 30 years but has been marred by the whether.

More rain was forecast for Saturday afternoon despite blue skies over the track.
