According to Ian Visits, this is the Underground’s first modern tube station constructed using timber.

The new ticketing hall, which replaces the smaller former one, is entirely adorned with timber.

This wooden design pays homage to the area’s aviation history, as the station is located where the London Aerodrome once stood, hosting air shows with early wooden aircraft.

The Aerodrome later transformed into the RAF Hendon military base.

The roof features both a flat and an arched section, designed so that the flat part collects rain while the arched section allows rainwater to run off.

This design helps prevent drain overflow.

Additionally, part of the roof is a ‘green’ roof, which incorporates plants and vegetation.

Inside the ticket hall, the clock has been restored as well.

A new lift has been installed for commuters, along with large windows that allow natural light to brighten the space and provide views of the trains on the platforms.

Outside the station, the pavements have also been widened.

During construction, the old platforms were removed, but two ‘dinner plates’ at either end were preserved.

These plates served as warning signals for train drivers to avoid stopping for too long at this historically significant location.

The ‘dinner plates’ were subsequently donated to the local museum.

The final touches on the station are currently being completed as passengers resume use, with expectations for full completion by June 2026.

This includes demolishing the old station building, leasing a small retail space—most likely to a café—and adding an accessible toilet.

The station's renovation has been a gradual process over the past few years, prompted by the growing population in the area.

While the former station would have reached capacity by the end of 2026, the new station is designed to accommodate the increasing demand in the area.

London’s Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, stated: “The Mayor and I strongly believe that everyone should be able to enjoy all that our great capital has to offer, making it essential to enhance the accessibility of our transport network.

“I’m thrilled that Colindale is now the 94th step-free station and will benefit from numerous improvements that not only enhance accessibility but also support significant housing developments in the local area, while boosting local businesses and fostering inclusive economic growth.

“More than a third of Underground stations across the capital are now step-free, and we are committed to increasing this number as we strive to create a fairer, better system for everyone.”

In other rail news, services are set to commence from a major UK city next year.

Additionally, f is scheduled to reopen with new train routes as part of a £200 million expansion.
