A member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewumi Adeyemi, has attributed the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State to security shortcomings, emphasizing the urgent need to reevaluate Nigeria’s security strategy.
The incident took place late Sunday night at the Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, located in the Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, where assailants invaded the school, resulting in the death of the vice principal, Malami Hassan Yakubu, and the kidnapping of 25 students.
In a response on Wednesday, Adeyemi stated that the abduction underscores ongoing deficiencies in intelligence gathering, preventive security measures, and the coordination among agencies responsible for safeguarding vulnerable communities.
He remarked, “There are times when a nation must pause and reflect deeply. This is one of those times. The kidnapping of twenty-five schoolgirls in Kebbi State serves as a painful reminder of how precarious the safety of Nigerian children has become.
“Schools, which should be the safest environments for learning and development, are once again being violated by armed individuals who operate with alarming ease. Families are mourning, communities are traumatized, and the nation is left questioning when this cycle will finally conclude.”
Adeyemi further noted that the attacks reveal deeper systemic issues within Nigeria’s security framework, including intelligence shortfalls, ineffective preventive measures, slow response times, inadequate coordination among agencies, and ambiguous operational command structures.
He urged the government to reform security operations by enhancing internal systems, providing agencies with improved resources, and establishing clear directives to boost efficiency.
“Our security agencies require enhanced resources, clearer objectives, and stronger backing. Our schools need reinforced safety measures. Our communities require early-warning systems. Additionally, our political leaders at all levels must prioritize the safety and well-being of the populace above all else,” he stated.
Adeyemi also urged authorities to focus on school safety and implement early-warning systems within communities to avert further tragedies.
